IND - Govalle Park
The last year or two, the Austin Weirdos of the Pecos League played in another city-owned park, Parque Zaragoza Neighborhood Park, that is less than two miles away. I had seen Michael Harris' posts on Twitter, as he had been there a week or two before, but nothing prepared me for the sight. I work to promote Texas private and parochial high school athletics and I just couldn't help but wonder if there were high schools in and around Austin that could have helped the league owner out on a decent deal. Michael said he tries to stay positive, but this beats Griggs Park in Alamogordo, New Mexico - another former Pecos League team - as the most challenging park in America to see "professional baseball" at. However, the story on this night wasn't the game itself, it was that the visiting Alpine '06 Cowboys had a player killed in a car accident that morning on the team's journey to Austin. An article on the Eldorado Success newspaper indicated that the broadcaster - who teamed up with the club's assistant general manager - had been driving the radio station's van and had an accident that caused the player, as a passenger, to be killed after striking a mesquite tree some nine miles west of Eldorado on U.S. 190. The assistant GM, who did the broadcast over his phone as the equipment had been destroyed in the accident, had shared with me some details that aren't appropriate to post here.

CLG - Billy Allgood Stadium
Billy Allgood Field was built in the 1970s after Louisiana College restarted baseball following a brief hiatus and has served as the home of Wildcat baseball since. Since 2000, more than a million dollars in improvements has been done to "The Billy" to upgrade it to modern standards, with most of the money coming through the fundraising efforts of head coach Mike Byrnes. Among those improvements; an outfield wall, new scoreboard with video message center on top, batting cages, perimeter fence around the facility, chair back seats and a covered seating area, press box, new sound system, walkways in front of the dugouts, and brick backstop. The improvements allowed for capacity inside the stadium to be around 550 people all told, 425 of which could find one of the new seats. One of the biggest improvements to Billy Allgood Field came in 2016 when the LCU Baseball Fieldhouse was added to the facility, as well as the installation of a turf infield. The turf infield was made possible by a generous donation in the memory of Allen "Dick" Wall. I saw Louisiana Christian University defeat Texas College, 20-8.
