I feel lucky to say that I got to cap off a wonderful trip to Chicago with a new ballpark in Impact Field, then add another when we reached Huntington Park the next day in Columbus after a long, hot day of driving. Both parks were charming, although it was probably too hot to really enjoy yourself in Columbus. Neither home team won, but people don’t care too much for that in the minors. Wiener Wednesday was a hit with our group at the Dogs game as well.
The kids and I also had our adventures with wetter and stranger weather this month as well after getting back home. We made a last minute decision to go see the Chili Peppers when the expected strom swerved north. It was a great decision, we were close enough to the storm to benefit from the cooling wind without a drop of rain. The crowd was sparse and the kids got to play and dance with the mascots and rally crew. Plus Myles Holmes had three homer game, which is less impressive at Shepherd Stadium but an achievement nonetheless.
We had less luck with the Squirrels. I still can’t believe they played in Code Purple air quality and were trying to not give ticket exchanges at first although they finally gave me a change out along with everyone else. I know that the air was improving, but preschoolers don’t understand why they can’t run around where they usually do. The next night was much nicer and was an exciting back and forth game to boot.
We also tried to time our doubleheader tickets to our last Squirrels game this month since they started in light rain. We got there for the end of Game 1 as the rain finally stopped, but the gap between games and the kids’ limits meant we only saw six innings total. Still the post rain weather was lovely and the Yard Goats and Squirrels were giving each other two close games.
