I don’t know how many of the people around me at the White Sox game Friday night had come primarily for the baseball and how many had come primarily for the postgame Marshmello concert, but it turns out that 5 home runs, 22 runs, and a 10 run 3rd inning, all for the home team can energize a crowd that was at first more engaged in chatting with each other. The crowd at Rate Field, at least the outfield crowd was young, diverse, tipsy to drunk and having an absolute blast watching the White Sox annihilate the Royals. It was a great time.
I also saw four Squirrels games earlier in the month. The two Wednesday games were not the most memorable. The Seawolves win on the 3rd was notable for the Squirrels bullpen wasting a great start from Perdomo, while the Squirrels win on the 10th was notable for Bo Davidson staying hot.
The kids couldn’t make it all the way to the end of the Squirrels ridiculous 6 run comeback in the bottom of the 9th on the 6th, but we saw Davidson’s tying homer. Erie’s starter had left injured and they had to turn to a position player to surrender the final blow as we heard on the radio. It was a crazy end to what had been a pretty pedestrian game. According to the radio broadcast it was the most runs in a 9th inning comeback in Squirrels franchise history.
Lastly, in a month where their parent club and other clubs have flubbed it, the Squirrels continue to put on an excellent pride night, partnered with the local community. Not asking the players to actively participate might unfortunately be aprt of their success, but it is very successful all the same. The teams played 4 1/2 innings before the skies opened up and drenched things, but that was enough for the Squirrels to take a 3-0 win over Harrisburg and as everyone waited for the weather to calm down before heading to their cars the team played music and it turned into a nice party on the concourse. It’s always a highlight of the season’s calendar in Richmond. Plus, the win clinched the first half pennant for the Squirrels!
