U.S. Steel Yard

It was Star Wars night at the Steel Yard where the Gary Southshore Railcats faced off against the visiting Sioux City Explorers. There were professional cosplayers dressed as stormtroopers and other imperial officers and soldiers. Rusty, the Railcats mascot, was dressed as Darth Vader. We grabbed some Dippin’ Dots and settled in for the game. I had potato pierogis with onions which I would rate as 7.5/10. At the bottom of the first LG Castillo hit a 2 RBI single to get the Railcats on the board. Drawn Knowles from Sioux City hit a solo home run to right field at the top of the 4th in what would turn into a close game. LG Castillo showed up again in the bottom of the fourth with a 2 RBI double. While these were the highlights of both teams offense the bats were on fire the whole night with both teams combining for over 20 hits. The Railcats held on to their lead and won the contest 8-6. The post game fireworks were spectacular with a finale that left us with our chests pounding and ears ringing. Overall experience was 9/10. The Railcats could do with some more unique food options and some of the staff could be friendlier but the fans are great and the atmosphere is fun.

    1. When I was writing the post I went off what appears to be an old image that uses USS but you are right it is just U.S. Was this a name change or poor branding? Almost the whole city is a dump. Every building is boarded up until you get a block or two from the Steel Yard.

      1. Not poor branding maybe just poor timing. Gary was one of the major manufacturers for U.S. Steel for a long time and now it’s not. The city population plummeted after the factories left and replaced them with casinos, hence it now being the crime capital of America.
