New Ballpark in Downtown San Antonio
Renderings have been released for new a Missions ballpark as they plan to relocate to downtown San Antonio. It will be built in area near the San Pedro Creek linear park and is part of a major effort to revitalize downtown San Antonio. They have passed the initial approval phase and are hoping to open in time for the 2028 season.
Their current ballpark, Nelson P. Wolff Municipal Stadium is located about 10 miles west of downtown. The park is beloved by many locals but it is also extremely outdated by modern standards. The facilities do not meet MiLB’s minimum requirements, the location lacks surrounding businesses (food/retail/lodging/entertainment), and the city risks losing the team without a significant upgrade.
There is some controversy however. Many locals have expressed concerns about tax increases, forced relocation of current residents, less convenient access for existing fans, and reduced parking availability in an already congested downtown.
As a former 8 year resident of San Antonio I am excited for the move and I think it will play a major part in continuing to grow the downtown of a city that I love deeply and want to see succeed. The San Pedro Creek area is becoming a beautiful civic art piece and a well designed park ads more to those development efforts. I feel that it gives local people a new reason to visit and spend money in a rebounding downtown as well as adding yet another attraction for San Antonio’s major tourist industry. As someone who is newly a tourist for San Antonio I cannot wait to add this ballpark to my list.
What are your thoughts on the move and what do you think the new ballpark should be named? Personally if it’s going to be a corporate sponsor I’d love to see a local favorite take it like: H-E-B Ballpark.
